What Causes Jaw Pain & How to Avoid It

If you’re suffering from jaw pain, you’re not alone! Approximately one out of every eight people suffers from jaw pain. Also referred to as temporomandibular joint disorder, jaw pain can be caused by many things.

Jaw pain may be a result of teeth grinding or clenching. Frequent gum-chewing or nail-biting can also cause soreness. Common causes of TMJ disorders among older adults are arthritis, muscle spasms in the head, neck or jaw, an injury or trauma to the jaw or surrounding areas, or sudden changes in dental structure like a tooth replacement or worn down teeth.

Other symptoms of a TMJ disorder are vertigo, sensitivity to sound, severe and frequent headaches, neck aches, jaw popping, locking, clicking, or a buzzing sound in the ear.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to prevent jaw pain. First, if you grind or clench your teeth, make a resolution to stop. Eat less hard or chewy foods and chew less gum. Stand up straight and don’t slouch. Massage your jaw often. When eating, take smaller bites, and use both sides of your mouth to chew. Make sure your face is actually relaxed when at rest. Your teeth should be parted with your lips together.

Your doctor or dentist may recommend a night guard or dental splint for your jaw pain. Relaxation techniques can help ease the tension and rest your jaw joints. Try jaw exercises to improve mobility in your jaw.
