Is There Really A Technique To Brushing Your Teeth?

Have you ever wondered if you’re brushing your teeth the right way? If you’re an adult, you’ve had decades of practice, so you probably know how to brush properly, right?

Actually that’s not always the case. It may surprise you how many adults don’t know the right way to brush. In fact, did you know that when you brush your teeth you’re supposed to brush for at least two full minutes? Most adults don’t even get close to that. Practice the following brushing steps that will help you achieve a cleaner, healthier smile:

Step 1. With your toothbrush angled at 45° towards your gums, brush the outside surfaces of your upper teeth, making sure to brush against the gum line, then repeat on the lower teeth.

Step 2. Brush the inside surfaces of your upper teeth, then repeat on your lower teeth.

Step 3. Brush the chewing surfaces of your upper teeth, then repeat on the lower teeth.

Step 4. Brush your tongue.

Remember, this should all take no less than two full minutes. Try setting a timer to make sure you are brushing for long enough.

For the healthiest smile, brush at least twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste: once in the morning after waking up, and again at night right before bedtime. Floss once a day, every day, preferably before bedtime. Go easy on the snacks you eat throughout the day, as they contribute most to plaque that forms on your teeth. Lastly, see your dentist at least twice a year for a checkup and cleaning.
