Ouch! The mouth is a bad place for injuries, sores, or inflammation. Even the smallest irritation in the mouth can cause serious discomfort. This blog post from Aspen Dental of Cache Valley is about these non-specific irritations in the mouth called stomatitis.
A good general definition for stomatitis is the inflammation of the membranes in the mouth. These usually affect a person’s ability to speak, eat, and even get to sleep at night. If you suffer from mouth sores, you know that stomatitis can really impact your day.
There are two main types of stomatitis:
- Canker sores. These can be very painful and may appear in clusters. They usually form inside the lips or cheek, or on the tongue. Most cases are minor and clear up in one to two weeks.
- Cold sores. Sometimes confused with canker sores, these are small, fluid-filled sores. They too can be painful, and usually appear on the lips near the edge of the mouth. They are caused by the herpes vireus and are also known as herpes stomatitis. They last about a week and are very contagious.
As with most issues, the sooner the condition is identified the sooner it can be properly treated.
